A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.

The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in public projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant concerns over safety standards.

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
